Celebration of Onam festival by the Malayalee Association of Pretoria :

The Malayalee Association of Pretoria celebrated Onam, on 9th of September, 2017 at the C R Swart High school in Waverly, Pretoria.

The function was attended by approximately 400 people of Malayalee origin from the Gauteng province of South Africa and surrounding areas.

The Onam festivities were inaugurated by the High Commissioner, Mrs. Ruchira Kamboj by lighting a lamp. High Commissioner also gave a speech on the occasion where she highlighted the immense contribution of the diaspora to the development of South Africa.

The President of the Association in his speech highlighted the significance of Onam.

Following the inauguration of the festival, a cultural programme took place in which adults and children participated with much spirit and gusto. The highlight of the program was a beautiful Bharatanatyam performance by children of all age groups. There were also a variety of fusion dances. Between the programs an “Anthakshari was also organized.

The Onam celebration also included an Onam “Sadya”, a vegetarian seven course meal, served on a banana leaf. This delicious meal was served to guests by male members of the community in an organized manner and was greatly appreciated by one and all.

The program culminated by members and guests joining together in a group dance.
